ABOUT OUR CANVAS DUFFEL BAGS
MADE TO LAST…IN THE U.S.A.

If after 10 years a seam breaks on your duffel bag, we will repair it. Just ship it back. Our canvas bags will last. #FACT

We love canvas. Our duffels are made with heavy-duty versions of this cotton fabric. The natural (white) colored canvas we use is a beefy 20 oz., raw canvas that literally allows the bags to stand up on their own. Our colored canvas weighs in at 18 ounces, which are still beefy. Our colored canvas is also treated with a water repellant to provide extra defense in rain and snow. Sourced in the USA.

We’re a canvas company, but we also love us some great leather! The elegant chromed-die black leather that we use is a 5oz weight - plus it is waterproof. Thank you Oregon Leather for helping find this amazing hide for our canvas duffel bags.
-
We like it raw and rugged. You won’t find any synthetic liners on the inside, but instead you will see the bones of our craft exposed in each canvas tote bag. You may find loose threads inside, but these can be trimmed off over time and won’t cause any harm.
-
We make our duffel bags one at a time here in our our modest sized shop. We hand cut the canvas, leather and webbing and then carefully sew them together on our industrial machines. We don’t have any fancy technology that helps through the process. Each bag is then inspected before we hand them off to you!
-
These are the most popular bags that we make. Our canvas duffel bags won’t burst at the seams in a few years when you walk from your car to your home with your wine and laptop. Simply peek inside our duffels and you’ll see the craftsmanship care we take to stitch the hefty canvas.
Frequently Asked Questions About Canvas Duffel Bags
Are canvas duffel bags waterproof?
Our canvas duffel bags are made from heavy-duty cotton canvas. The colored canvas is treated with a water-repellent finish to provide protection in rain and snow, while the natural canvas is untreated and highly breathable. Canvas is not fully waterproof like synthetic PVC bags, but it performs extremely well for real-world travel and outdoor use — and ages beautifully over time.
What makes a duffel bag “heavy duty”?
A heavy duty duffel bag is built from thick materials, reinforced stress points, and industrial-grade stitching. Our canvas duffel bags are constructed from 18 oz. cotton canvas, paired with durable webbing and leather reinforcements. Each bag is sewn one at a time on industrial machines, prioritizing long-term durability over mass production speed.
Are your duffel bags made in the USA?
Yes. Every Beckel Canvas duffel bag is handmade in Oregon. We cut, sew, and assemble each bag in our small shop using American-sourced materials whenever possible. We’ve been building canvas gear since 1964, and domestic craftsmanship remains central to our process.
How long do canvas duffel bags last?
When properly constructed and cared for, canvas duffel bags can last for decades. Heavy cotton canvas is known for its strength and ability to soften and improve with age. We back our craftsmanship with a 10-year seam repair guarantee — if a seam fails under normal use, ship it back and we’ll repair it.
Can I use a canvas duffel bag as a carry-on?
Yes. Our 28L and 46L canvas duffel bags are carry-on friendly for most airlines. The 46L “War & Peace” duffel is especially popular for weekend travel and overhead bin storage. Always confirm with your airline’s specific carry-on size requirements before travel.
Is canvas better than nylon for a duffel bag?
Canvas and nylon serve different purposes. Nylon is lightweight and often fully waterproof, but it may tear or degrade faster over time. Heavy-duty canvas offers greater abrasion resistance, structure, and long-term durability. Many customers prefer canvas duffel bags for their repairability and classic look that improves with use.
How do I clean a canvas duffel bag?
Spot clean your canvas duffel bag with mild soap and water. Avoid machine washing, as it can weaken fabric and hardware over time. Allow the bag to air dry completely before storing. Minor marks and wear are part of canvas’s natural character.
Are canvas duffel bags good for gym or travel use?
Yes. Canvas duffel bags are ideal for gym sessions, weekend trips, road travel, and gear storage. The structured nature of heavy canvas allows the bag to stand upright and hold its shape, making packing and access easier than many soft synthetic duffels.
